Advantages and disadvantages of hair transplantation
What to do in case of advanced baldness?
Once the hair loss has progressed, this can have a negative effect on self-confidence. Although male pattern baldness is socially much more accepted than hair loss in Women...often feel... Men uncomfortable and less attractive with increasing baldness. Mostly, numerous products have already been tried out, until finally, as a last resort, a hair transplant is considered.
However, hair transplantation is a surgical procedure that also has its risks. In this article we will explain the advantages and disadvantages of hair transplantation so that you can weigh up whether this option is really the right one for you.
What types of hair transplants are there?
FUE or FUT
In hair transplantation, the hair follicle is removed from one part of the body and "implanted" again in another. Numerous hairy parts of the body are suitable for the removal of hair follicles. Even body hair is suitable for transplantation, but most often the hair is taken from the safe "donor zone" on the head, which is resistant to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In men, this is the zone at the back and sides of the head. In women, this is often more difficult, as there is usually diffuse hair loss on the entire scalp and therefore there is no safe donor zone.
In the so-called FUE method, individual hair follicles are removed with a hollow needle and then inserted again in individual cases. This is done in an operation lasting several hours and often even several days under local anaesthetic, depending on the number of so-called grafts to be transplanted.
In the FUT method, also known as the strip technique, a complete strip of tissue is removed from the back of the head with a scalpel and the open area is sutured. The FUT method also involves working on the patient under local anaesthetic. The hair follicles are then extracted from the removed strip of tissue and inserted in the bald areas, just as in the FUE method.
Advantages and disadvantages of Follicular Unit Extraction
A clear advantage of the individual removal of the follicles is clearly the minimal, almost invisible scarring. Because each hair is removed individually and staggered from the donor area, the removal is no longer detectable after about 10 days in the case of regular healing. Although you have to take special care of your scalp over several weeks and are not allowed to sleep on the freshly transplanted hair, you do not have to plan a longer vacation with this method. You can go to work the next day without any problems as long as you do not wear a helmet or hat, swim in chlorinated water or do extreme sports.
However, as with all surgical procedures, this method also has its disadvantages. Everything stands and falls with the doctor who performs the operation. Unfortunately, there is bitter competition for the ever growing market of hair transplants. Cheap providers from abroad lure with cheap offers. But be careful! Cheap does not equal good. Often it is not the doctors themselves who remove the hair follicles, but assistants who are more or less experienced. If an inexperienced doctor or assistant damages the hair follicle during the extraction process, the transplanted hair does not grow and the follicle dies. Depending on the number of hairs damaged during the extraction process, you will sooner or later have a problem because you do not have an infinite number of hairs available in the donor area. So if you decide to go to the wrong clinic, it is quite possible that you will end up with less hair on your head than before, despite the hair transplant. Not to mention the financial loss that a failed operation will cause.
The FUE method is, due to its labour intensity, more expensive than hair transplantation with the FUT method.
Advantages and disadvantages of follicular unit transplantation
With the FUT or Strip method, there is far less risk of damaging the hair follicles during extraction, as they are extracted from the extracted skin strip under the microscope. The yield of this type of hair transplantation is higher with less time required, which makes this method much cheaper.
However, the removal of entire strips of skin results in one or more linear scars on the back of the head, which remain visible depending on the hair texture and length. In addition, there is a longer and more painful healing phase, in addition to the usual risks of a surgical procedure on the head.
When a dream becomes a nightmare
scars, infections and loss of hair follicles
Caution is required not only when removing the follicles. The aesthetic transplantation of the individual hair follicles is also a true art that not everyone has mastered and for which a lot of feeling and experience is required. The hairline in particular can quickly look artificial if care is not taken. It is not for nothing that the restoration of a natural hairline is one of the most frequent corrections among hair operations.
The correct transplantation of hair follicles in the direction of hair growth is also important. Here too, the result is often poor if the surgeon needs a little more practice. Who would like to have "wild" hair in the opposite direction of hair growth?
Apart from the purely aesthetic aspects, hygiene also plays an important role, because you can catch not only germs, but also the odd infection if you have not worked clean and hygienically. Feel free to google for "hair transplant gone wrong". The pictures are not for the faint of heart. If an infection occurs due to lack of hygiene, the hair follicles cannot grow properly and you will not only lose the invested amount, but also the transplanted hair that you are now missing in the donation zone. In addition, this can lead to unsightly scarring, which is difficult or impossible to correct.
Beautiful full hair - forever!
Long term results for a more youthful appearance
Be sure to place yourself in experienced hands and do not save money at the wrong end. Hair transplants, even if performed under local anesthesia, are not something you should take lightly. If you have the financial means, first speak to different doctors and get real results. Never give in to the advertising promises of cheaper providers, even if they may be tempting. Ask specifically who will perform the extraction on you. There are some hair clinics where the doctors still work on their own and do not leave the extraction and implantation to their assistants.
If the hair transplantation is carried out by an experienced specialist under hygienic conditions, you can look forward to long-term and natural-looking results. Even if hair is transplanted into the areas of the head affected by hair loss, the hair follicles are immune to the influence of DHT and the implanted hair should not fall out. It is important that the freshly implanted hair follicles are optimally supplied with the necessary nutrients so that the hair can grow well.
Remember that the result may still change visually. Hair transplantation does not protect against progressive loss of the remaining main hair, which has not been implanted. This can then either make a new hair operation necessary, or you can prevent further hair loss with appropriate care.
